Double glazing

Double-glazed windows and doors, or new double-glazed units in frames that can take them — low-e, laminated and acoustic glass.

A double-glazed unit is two panes of glass sealed around a gap of dry air or gas. It slows the heat moving through the glass in both directions and cuts street noise, which in a Maltese town is often the reason people ask. Low-emissivity (low-e) coatings and solar-control glass slow the summer sun's heat further; laminated glass adds security and more noise reduction.

There are two ways to get it. In most homes it means new apertures — PVC, aluminium or timber — double glazed as standard. Where a frame is sound and deep enough, the old single pane can sometimes be swapped for a double-glazed unit; old slim aluminium and timber frames often cannot take one, and the survey tells you which.

The government's Roof Insulation and Double Glazing scheme, run by the Regulator for Energy and Water Services (REWS), pays half the eligible cost of retrofitted double glazing, VAT included, up to €1,000, on the home you live in — open until 31 December 2026 or until the funds run out. It has rules that are easy to trip over: you apply before you buy, the product and the retailer must be registered with REWS, and the finished aperture must reach a U-value of 3.7 W/m²K or better. Read the REWS scheme page before you order; we put the U-value and the paperwork you need on the quote.

What it costs

A replacement double-glazed unit in an existing frame has no published Maltese price, so it is quoted after the measure-up. New double-glazed apertures are priced on the PVC and aluminium pages; the aluminium bands are shown here for comparison.

A band, not a quote: the low end is a straightforward job with clear access, the high end is the same job with the complications a site visit finds. Materials are included where the line says so.

How it works

You deal with us. We survey and measure free, quote from a published rate card, then either deliver the job ourselves with CheckYourTraders-verified installers or introduce a vetted partner who contracts with you directly — and we stay your point of contact throughout.

Questions people ask

My double glazing has misted up between the panes. Can it be fixed?
The seal has failed and moisture has got in; the unit cannot be dried out properly, but it can usually be replaced on its own without changing the frame. We measure the unit and price a replacement.
Is double glazing worth it in a hot climate?
It slows heat through the glass whichever way it is travelling, so it helps keep a cooled room cool in summer as well as a heated one warm in winter, and it reduces noise. On a sunny elevation, low-e or solar-control glass and shade outside the window do more than the second pane alone. We do not promise a saving on your bill.
Is there a grant for double glazing?
There is one open now. REWS's Roof Insulation and Double Glazing (retrofitting) scheme pays 50% of the eligible cost of double-glazed apertures, VAT included, up to €1,000, on the home you live in, until 31 December 2026 or until the funds run out. Apply online before you buy anything: the apertures must come from a REWS-registered retailer, reach a U-value of 3.7 W/m²K or better and be fitted within six months of approval. REWS decides who qualifies, not the installer.
