PVC & uPVC apertures

PVC — in Malta usually just called PVC, elsewhere uPVC, the same rigid material — is the most common replacement for old timber and single-glazed aluminium apertures. The frame does not conduct heat the way bare aluminium does, it needs no painting, and the multi-chamber profiles take a double-glazed unit as standard.

None of the Maltese installers we checked publishes a fitted price for made-to-measure PVC — they quote after measuring. What is published is retail: ready-made, double-glazed PVC windows in standard sizes sell for €169 to €319 supply only, and standard PVC doors for €509 to €579. Those figures are on the price list below so you can see the floor; a made-to-measure window, fitted and sealed into a Maltese opening, with the old one taken out, costs more, and the measure-up turns it into a fixed price.

What makes a PVC window good or bad in Malta is mostly the fitting: how the frame is fixed into a limestone reveal, how the gap is foamed and sealed against driving rain, and whether the sill throws water away from the wall. We measure every opening ourselves, then deliver either as your contractor with CheckYourTraders-verified installers or through a vetted partner who contracts with you directly.

What this covers

What a good PVC profile looks like

Cut-away of a uPVC window profile: several hollow chambers, a steel reinforcing bar inside and rubber gaskets either side of the double-glazed unit. Illustration

uPVC does not have to be white: a foiled finish gives a timber look, here oak inside and anthracite outside, beside traditional persjani. Illustration

What it costs

The published Maltese PVC price list is retail and supply only: ready-made, double-glazed windows and doors in standard sizes, delivered, not fitted. Made-to-measure PVC fitted into your openings has no published Maltese price, so it is quoted after the measure-up, itemised, with removal of the old apertures on the same quote.

Questions people ask

Is PVC the same as uPVC?
For windows, yes. uPVC is unplasticised PVC, the rigid material window profiles are made from; Maltese suppliers mostly just say PVC. What differs between systems is the number of chambers in the profile, the steel reinforcement inside it, the gaskets and the hardware — ask for those on the quote.
Does PVC go yellow or brittle in the Maltese sun?
Good profiles are made with UV stabilisers and, in white, hold their colour for many years; cheap profiles are where discolouration shows up. Wood-effect foils and coloured finishes vary by system. We put the profile system and its finish on the quote so you can check it.
Can I replace only some of the windows?
Yes. Most people start with the windows that face the street or the sun. We measure the whole property once, so the rest can be ordered later to match.
