In a Maltese flat the sliding door onto the balcony or terrace is usually the biggest piece of glass in the home, the one that lets in the most sun and the most street noise, and the one that sticks first. Aluminium is the usual choice for wide openings because the frames stay slim; PVC sliding and lift-and-slide systems insulate better for the money.

The published Maltese guide range for a typical two-panel aluminium sliding patio door, supplied and fitted, is €700 to €2,000; wider openings, lift-and-slide and folding systems sit above that and are quoted. None of the Maltese installers we checked publishes a fitted price for PVC sliding doors, so those are quoted after the measure-up.

What happens outside the door matters as much as the door. A band, not a quote: the low end is a straightforward job with clear access, the high end is the same job with the complications a site visit finds. Materials are included where the line says so.

Questions people ask

My sliding door is hard to open. Does it need replacing?

Not always. Worn rollers, a track full of grit or a frame that has dropped are the usual causes, and rollers and tracks can often be replaced. The survey or a repair visit tells you whether it is worth fixing.

Lift-and-slide or ordinary sliding?

A lift-and-slide panel lifts off its seals as you turn the handle, so very large and heavy panels run lightly and seal tightly when closed. It costs more than an ordinary sliding system; for a standard balcony door an ordinary slider is usually enough.

Can you also shade the terrace?
